Excellence in Innovation: Rangiora RSA

Blog / Excellence in Innovation: Rangiora RSA

RW Design is proud to be an innovator in architectural design – and our team is very excited to be considered in the Innovation category of the Registered Master Builders Association’s New Zealand Commercial Project Awards for our work on the revitalisation of the Rangiora RSA premises.

This prestigious awards programme sets the benchmark for commercial construction in New Zealand, and this year introduced two new special awards to its categories: The Sustainability Award and the Innovation Award, which recognises transformation is happening in our sector around process, design and construction.

Our work on the Rangiora RSA premises, in partnership with RPC Construction, was hugely innovative in our approach and the extensive staging of the construction process. The staged approach of the construction project meant that the Rangiora RSA was able to stay fully operational throughout the duration of the project.

This ensured there was no down time for the Club and they were able to continue providing a service to their existing members, as well as welcome new members to the facility. In fact, during the 18-month construction timeframe RSA was able to grow their membership numbers and positively develop their presence within Rangiora – a feat that is generally virtually impossible to achieve during a major renovation!

The project involved additions and alterations to the Rangiora RSA building, which required a significant amount of work to be carried out to bring up to 100% NBS following the 2010/2011 Canterbury earthquakes.

Given that the work required was significant and invasive, the RSA – after consultation with Robin White of RW Design and Andrew Stevens Quantity Surveyor – decided that it would be appropriate to carry out an extensive upgrade of the building and facilities at the same time, including:

  • An addition of a Sports area, incorporating TAB, darts and pool
  • New outdoor courtyard, incorporating outdoor seating, extensive landscaping and a memorial fountain
  • New entrance, incorporating a new management office and entry lobby

The rest of the interior and exterior of the existing building was extensively modernised to tie in with the facility’s new additions.

The transformation of the building has been huge, but the innovative staged approach to construction has made this project one our team has been particularly proud of.
