The views, the weather, and the fishing were all factors in the creation of this comforting coastal home. Making a place for the family to enjoy was at the heart of the process. The owner's connection to the site was born out of childhood fishing trips and visits with their own families when deciding to build a second home to use for family holidays and weekends away.
The clifftop site affords the hoe extraordinary views out to sea, Motynau Island and back to Pegasus Bay and Banks Peninsula on a clear day.
Design Features and Creative Solutions.
The South-East and North facing windows and doors in the open plan living space are key to consenting the home with its views and exterior spaces, allowing a strong relationship between the interior and exterior. The window and doors specified are fibreglass with thermally broken double glazing.
Walau stone, cedar, copper and asphalt roof shingles are used to create a cohesive and robust exterior. Chosen to withstand the harsh conditions, whilst allowing the house to sit respectfully within its context, taking inspiration from Motunau Island the surround natural landscaping
Functionality and scale of the interior was key, with the client's desire for the home to work when they are there on their own as well as hosting large groups. This meant creating an open plan living space that incorporated a large kitchen, dining space and multiple sitting areas. Whist being generous in scale it has an intimate and igniting feel, this is achieved by bringing in the Waiau stone and cedar and combining it with warm and texturally rich materials such as the timber floors, granite kitchen top and plywood ceiling panels.
There are five double bedrooms, all with their own unique views. The master bedroom is connected to the living space, whilst the rest are more separated, allowing the house to grow or shirk with the amount of people that are staying.
